Alappuzha is a landmark between the broad Arabian sea and a network of rivers flowing into it. In the first decade of the 20th Century, the then Viceroy of the Indian Empire Lord Curzon made a visit in the State to Alleppey. He names Alleppey as the Venice of the East.

Alleppey has a wonderful past. Its rich past is dated back to the second half of the 18th century.  History says that the city had trade relations with ancient Greece and Rome in B.C and in the Middle Ages. Alleppey was formed on the 17th of August 1957.

It is assumed that the name of Alappuzha was derived from the geographical position and physical features of the place which means ‘the land between the sea and the network of rivers flowing into it.

How to reach?

By Air: The Cochin International Airport, located at a distance of 75 kilometers from the city of Alleppey. The airport is well connected to major cities in India as well as abroad. From the Cochin International Airport, one can easily book a taxi or a cab to get to Alleppey.

By Train: So, the fastest route to reach Alleppey from Delhi is to take direct or stopover flights which are available till Cochin, from where buses or cabs can be hired to reach Alleppey. The cheapest way to reach Alleppey from Delhi is by train.

By Road: Alleppey is conveniently reachable via the road, taking public transportation. There are numerous Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses running along this route from all parts of Kerala.

One can also board buses from cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Madurai, Puducherry, Coimbatore, and other major cities to reach Alleppey. A road trip would make for a beautiful experience. The distance from these cities is between 250 to 600 Kms.

Marthanda Varma belonged to the Venado Kulasekhara Dynasty. He is known as the ‘Maker of Modern Travancore’, and ruled the city till his death in 1758. He defeated Dutch forces at the Battle of Colachel in 1741.

To visit Alleppey is between October and February when the temperature is moderate, making it the best time to explore the beautiful Alleppey. If you are on your honeymoon, October to February is the best time to enjoy houseboats or spend time lazing on the beach.

Tourists are not advisable to travel between July to September as you can experience rainfall at that time. July to September are the wet months for the place. Monsoon lovers can soak themselves in the aura of nature and the whole atmosphere is painted green and drop!

April to June are the summer months for Alleppey. These months are not recommended to travel as the temperature goes so high shutting all the outdoor activities.
