Vasco Da Gama who invaded India first put his foot to a beach called Kappad, a few minutes drive from Kozhikode. It is also known as Calicut the  ‘City of Spices’.

Forming the prime trading center for spices from the East, this place became popular as the City of Spices. Kozhikode was the capital city of the Zamorin regime during their rule over Northern Kerala.

The hospitable nature of the Zamorin kings allured merchants from various parts of the world to Kozhikode, including the Portuguese, British, Dutch, and the Chinese. Along with its rich cultural and historical heritage, this city can also delight tourists with its natural glamour.

How to Visit?

Being one of the top travel destinations in India, Kozhikode is well connected and can be easily accessed from all the major cities. One can easily navigate the route and reach the place with their own convenience.

By Air: The Calicut International Airport is the nearest airport. The airport is well connected globally and it sees a huge influx of tourists all the time. From the airport, you can opt for a cab, auto, or bus to reach Kozhikode.

By Train: Quilandi Railway Station is just 24 km away from the place. So you can board a train from any major city in India and reach Quilandi, and then travel to the abode of beaches by road.

By Road: Kozhikode can be reached via road from all the nearby cities without any trouble. Bengaluru is 350 Km, Coimbatore is about 178 Km and Madurai is 365 away from the city. Mysore is about a 150 km drive farm whereas Thrissur is merely 80 km away from the place.

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary: The Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is named after the Kadalundi River. The Sanctuary hill is located in the Malappuram District of Kerala around 200 m above sea level. Nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts visit this stunning location to spot a large number of beautiful migratory birds of the Kadalundi River.

Pazhassi Raja Museum: In 1976, it was converted to an archeological museum and in 1980, it was renamed the Pazhassi Raja Archaeological Museum. This museum in East Hill is just at a distance of 5 km from Kozhikode town.

The Pazhassi Raja museum has a collection of ancient pottery, toys, stone, Models of temples, war weapons used by  British and French soldiers, and other metal sculptures.

Thikkoti Light House: Located 30 km away from the city, a great weekend getaway spot. A mix of gleaming sand, swaying palm fringes, blue waters, and plunge waves, is what makes the beach most active.

LightHouse was built after a shipwreck was found. It is 34m tall and visitors are allowed to climb the winding steps to the top and enjoy the thrilling views of the ocean.

Thali Temple: Thali Kshetram is an ancient temple situated at a distance of one km to the east of Kozhikode railway station. The Jyotirlinga inside the temple is believed to have been installed by Lord Parasuraman. Hindus are only allowed to visit inside the temple. Mundu or dhoti is a dress code to be worn by men and women should wear saree or salwar kameez.

Things to do

Tourists are not advisable to travel between July to September as you can experience rainfall at that time. July to September are the wet months for the place. One can visit this place during these months to enjoy the festivals and fairs of the city. Monsoon lovers can soak themselves in the aura of nature and the whole atmosphere is painted green and drop!

April to June are the summer months for Kozhikode. These months are not recommended to travel as the temperature goes so high shutting all the outdoor activities. Things to Carry
Carry the clothes according to the season you are visiting. Since it is a hill station, a pair of warm clothes is recommended in all the seasons. Also, if you are heading to Wayanad during rains, ensure water protection like umbrellas and raincoats.

Carry comfortable footwear to walk and trek amidst the hills. You won’t get paved paths all the way. Ensure that moisture does not pass through shoes to your feet. Carrying a mosquito repellant is always helpful as mosquitoes are found in abundance during monsoons.
