History

There is not so much to know about the history of Thekkady as the region was dominated by various tribes in earlier times. One of the major attractions here is the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary which is dated back to 1934.

The Periyar is spread over an area of 777 square km and was declared as a Tiger Reserve in 1978. Blessed with fabulous landscapes, rich flora and fauna and a wide variety of wild animals and birds, the sanctuary has been a famous tourist destination since the day of its establishment.

The Periyar Valley was under the reign of the Pandyas who ruled from Madurai until the 12th century. In 1895, the Mullaperiyar dam was constructed.

The lake, in the center of the sanctuary, is the nucleus of the reserve and the place where the elephants and the avifauna come to frolic, to drink water and to cool themselves with dips in the hot months. down to play.

By Flight: Thekkady does not have an airport of its own. The closest ones are Madurai International Airport (140 km) and Cochin (190 km). However, flights are usually prone to get rescheduled or canceled due to bad weather. So, confirmation of flight till the last moment is a must.

By Rail: The Indian Railways are the most convenient and feasible option to reach Thekkady. The closest railhead to Thekkady is Kottayam which has excellent connections with other cities in South India. The Kottayam railway station is about 110 km from Thekkady, which can be reached via buses or private cabs.
